Bishop Andrzej Jeż convicted in landmark Polish abuse reporting case

A district court in Tarnów, Poland, has convicted Bishop Andrzej Jeż for failing to promptly notify law enforcement about the sexual abuse of minors by two priests under his supervision, Stanisław P. and Tomasz K.

This marks the first time in Poland that a sitting diocesan bishop has been convicted for failing to fulfill the legal obligation to report pedophilia. The court sentenced Jeż to two years of restriction of liberty. As part of this sentence, 25 percent of his monthly salary will be deducted for two years and donated to the Fundacja Dajemy Dzieciom Siłę (I Give Power to Children Foundation).

Additionally, the bishop was ordered to pay 20,000 PLN in total reparations—10,000 PLN for each case—to the Fund for Victim Assistance and Post-Penitentiary Assistance. The court rejected the bishop's defense, which cited legal ambiguity and ecclesiastical secrecy, ruling that secular law takes precedence over the Vatican's pontifical secrecy in such matters.

The verdict is not final. The Tarnów Curia has expressed disagreement with the ruling and intends to appeal after reviewing the written justification. The prosecution had originally sought a suspended prison sentence and a fine.
