Bishop Bammel calls for dialogue amid rising societal tension

Christina-Maria Bammel, the regional bishop of the Evangelical-Lutheran Landeskirche in Braunschweig, has issued a warning regarding increasing social coarsening and a lack of empathy in society.

Speaking in Wolfenbüttel, Bammel emphasized that communication and mutual listening are essential for understanding. She noted that rising radicalization and a lack of direct dialogue are dangerous trends that manifest as resentment and diminished empathy.

Regarding interactions with supporters of the AfD, Bammel stated that a lecturing tone is ineffective, noting that arguments often fail to resonate. Instead, she advocates for attentive questioning and creating shared spaces to prevent social fragmentation in everyday life.
