Bishop Castro Marte condemns reckless driving in eastern Dominican Republic
Jesús Castro Marte, Bishop of the Diocese of Our Lady of Altagracia, has expressed deep concern regarding the frequency of traffic accidents in the eastern tourist region of the Dominican Republic. In a statement shared on social media, the religious leader criticized the recklessness of certain drivers, specifically mentioning motorcyclists and bus operators who exceed speed limits.
Castro Marte referred to these reckless drivers as ‘sicarios del volante’ (hitmen behind the wheel), noting that their behavior endangers both passengers and other road users. He cited a recent fatal accident in La Otra Banda, in the La Altagracia province, which resulted in the deaths of three people, including a child.
While calling for the full weight of the law to be applied to those proven to be endangering lives, the Bishop emphasized that he is not generalizing all motorists. He urged for official investigations to conclude before assigning specific blame, but stressed that the pattern of imprudence observed from Miches to other parts of the region must be addressed.
