Bishop Dom José Carlos attacked during mass in Caraguatatuba

A man invaded the Cathedral of the Divine Holy Spirit in Caraguatatuba, São Paulo, during a Sunday morning mass on October 4, 2026, to attack Bishop Dom José Carlos Chacorowski.

According to reports from Father Vladimir Ferreira Coelho, the assailant arrived on a motorcycle, removed his flip-flops, and walked toward the altar. During the attack, the individual shouted threats, including, “Avisa para o seu Jesus que a condenação dele está próxima” (Tell your Jesus that his condemnation is near).

Churchgoers intervened to protect the bishop and successfully restrained the man. The Municipal Civil Guard (GCM) was called to the scene and detained the suspect. Authorities are currently investigating the incident to determine the individual's identity and motive.
