Bishop Enrico Trevisi calls for dialogue over Trieste migration tensions

Bishop Enrico Trevisi of Trieste has issued a call for dialogue and concrete solutions regarding the ongoing migration tensions in Piazza della Libertà. The appeal follows restrictions imposed by the police on humanitarian assistance activities in the area, which include bans on distributing meals and blankets during weekends and limited operating hours on other days.

The Bishop emphasized that the Church aims to address the needs of refugees and asylum seekers through practical actions, such as the Sant’Anastasio dormitory and Spazio 11, rather than through ideological conflict. He noted that while the Church seeks to support vulnerable populations, it also recognizes the need to ensure citizen security. Trevisi urged institutions and volunteer organizations to move past confrontations to find shared solutions that alleviate the suffering of those waiting for asylum decisions without compromising public order.
