Bishop Gorman leads Nevada football season with new independent format

Thirty Clark County School District (CCSD) high‑school football programs in Nevada have moved to independent status for the next two seasons, meaning they cannot compete for the state championship. The schools are organized into three ten‑team levels split east‑west, with a new playoff structure that culminates in the Superintendents Cup on Oct. 23.

Bishop Gorman, ranked No. 2 nationally by MaxPreps, is targeting a fifth mythical national title. Its schedule includes a non‑league showdown with No. 1 St. John Bosu on Aug. 21, followed by road games at Columbus (Florida), Lone Peak (Utah) and Mater Dei (California). The Review‑Journal’s preseason top‑10 rankings also highlight Liberty and Arbor View as leading contenders in the new CCSD independent group.

The changes follow controversy over the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association’s rating system and a failed Open Division proposal, prompting the CCSD move to ensure competitive balance and scheduling flexibility for its 30 teams.
