Bishop Heiner Wilmer criticizes AfD political stance

Heiner Wilmer, Chairman of the German Bishops' Conference, has issued strong criticisms regarding the political landscape in Germany, specifically targeting the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. Speaking at the St. Michael reception of the Catholic Office in Berlin, Wilmer characterized the AfD as "demonstrably nationalist and völkisch in orientation."

Wilmer stated that such ideologies have no place in Christianity, Judaism, or Islam. He asserted that the Church will actively oppose these views rather than withdrawing from the debate. He further argued that the AfD attacks human dignity, freedom, and democracy, thereby undermining the democratic state structure. Prior to recent elections, Wilmer had also called on citizens to "sharpen their conscience" regarding migration and political choices.
