Bishop Jean-Michaël Durhône calls for action against employment discrimination in Mauritius

Bishop Jean-Michaël Durhône of the Catholic Diocese of Port-Louis has called for a fact-based investigation into employment discrimination in Mauritius. During a homily on the feast of St. Louis, the Bishop urged society to move beyond rumors and generalizations by utilizing data, studies, and rational investigation to address social inequalities.

To address this issue, the diocese is launching an initiative involving a joint team from the Commission Justice et Paix and the Commission pour la Cause Créole. This group will study the various dimensions of employment discrimination, drawing on previous research such as the 2011 report from the Commission Vérité et Justice, which highlighted challenges faced by the Creole community in accessing jobs.

The Bishop emphasized the need for effective legal measures and the implementation of the equality of opportunity law. The initiative aims to build upon recommendations made years ago, including the introduction of sanctions against unfair hiring practices and the conducting of audits within both public and private sectors to identify discriminatory behaviors.
