Bishop Joan Martí i Alanis commemorated in Seu d'Urgell ceremony

On 25 July, the Cathedral of Santa Maria in Seu d'Urgell hosted a Mass and memorial for the late Bishop Joan Martí i Alanis, marking the 75th anniversary of his priestly ordination. Martí (1928‑2009) served as Bishop of Urgell and co‑prince of Andorra. The event was organised by the Agrupació Cultural el Milà and the Parish of Santa Úrsula, drawing about fifty participants from Milà, Alcover, Montblanc and other towns in the Tarragona archdiocese.

The celebration was presided over by Bishop Josep‑Lluís Serrano, the current Bishop of Urgell and co‑prince of Andorra, and was attended by Andorran officials – syndicate General Carles Ensenyat and Foreign Minister Imma Tor – as well as local mayors Antonio Agüera (el Milà) and Robert Figueras (Alcover) and regional council president Joan Canela. During the homily Bishop Serrano recalled Martí’s episcopal motto “La unitat en la caritat” and highlighted his pastoral work and role in modernising the Principality of Andorra. The ceremony featured the presentation of Martí’s mitre to Bishop Serrano, an offering of flowers at the bishop’s crypt, and concluded with a communal lunch where attendees shared memories of the late prelate.
