Bishop Juan Espinoza faces online threats after criticizing Mexican government

The Bishop of Aguascalientes, Juan Espinoza, has become the target of online threats following his recent criticisms of the Mexican federal government. A content creator identified as José Lápiz, a supporter of the Morena party, posted on social media offering 40,000 pesos to anyone who would attack the prelate.

Bishop Espinoza had previously used his homily to criticize the administration, stating that while the government speaks of freedom and plurality, it threatens those with differing opinions and allows the country to fall into the hands of criminals. He also noted a lack of practical support for mothers searching for disappeared relatives.

The Mexican Episcopal Conference (CEM) has condemned the threats. Monsignor Ramón Castro Castro, president of the CEM, stated that such acts aim to intimidate and silence the moral voice of the Church. He noted that religious leaders are often told to stay out of politics, but emphasized that the Church cannot remain silent. Additionally, the National Front for the Family in Aguascalientes expressed its support for the Bishop, asserting that he would not be intimidated.
