Bishop Karl-Heinz Wiesemann resigns from Speyer Diocese
Bishop Karl-Heinz Wiesemann has resigned from the Diocese of Speyer, effective immediately, after Pope Leo XIV accepted his request. The 66-year-old prelate, who has led the diocese since 2008, stepped down nine years ahead of the standard retirement age, citing significant health challenges.
Wiesemann stated that the “burden of extensive responsibility” has left deep physical and mental marks on him. In a letter to the faithful, he revealed a long-standing struggle with a recurrent depressive disorder, which he noted was exacerbated by the ongoing sexual abuse scandals within the Catholic Church and the pressures of navigating structural reforms, secularism, and declining membership.
Heiner Wilmer, chairman of the German Bishops' Conference, expressed regret over the resignation, describing Wiesemann as a “great loss” to the church. Wilmer praised Wiesemann’s transparent approach to addressing abuse and his commitment to prioritizing the well-being of victims.
