Bishop Karl-Heinz Wiesemann to hold farewell service in Speyer

Bishop Emeritus Dr. Karl-Heinz Wiesemann will hold a farewell service at Speyer Cathedral on September 13, 2026. His resignation was accepted by Pope Leo XIV on August 19 following requests made due to health issues.

The farewell ceremony is expected to include various church officials, including Bishop Heiner Wilmer of the German Bishops' Conference and Archbishop Herwig Gössel, as well as representatives from regional governments and ecumenical organizations. The service will be broadcast live via the Diocese and Cathedral YouTube channels.

Wiesemann’s resignation has highlighted discussions regarding the mental health and professional pressures faced by church leaders. The decision, cited as being driven by health concerns, has brought attention to the challenges of burnout and the increasing complexity of pastoral leadership and administrative responsibilities within the modern Church.
