Paraguay medical professionals negotiate salary increases amid resignation crisis

Paraguayan medical professionals are engaged in intense negotiations with the government over salary improvements. Approximately 500 doctors have resigned from the Ministry of Health, prompting the government to propose a new salary structure based on seniority and academic training. This proposal includes monthly increases ranging from 400,000 to 3,000,000 guaraníes.

The National Medical Union (Sinamed) has rejected this differentiated approach, demanding a linear increase of 3,000,000 guaraníes per contract to raise base incomes from 5,000,000 to 8,000,000 guaraníes for 12-hour weekly shifts. Labor Minister Mónica Recalde has urged flexibility to avoid a massive budgetary impact and has called for the maintenance of minimum essential services to prevent a planned strike on September 21 and 22.

Senator Antonio Barrios criticized the Ministry of Health for a delayed dialogue, noting that while the government has offered rewards for specialists, the union's demand for a universal floor would create a massive fiscal burden. The government maintains that public resources are limited and requires continued dialogue to reach a sustainable agreement.
