Bishop of South Carolina apologizes for Porter-Gaud worship controversy

The Bishop of South Carolina issued an apology to his diocese regarding controversy surrounding his participation in the dedication of the new St. Timothy’s Chapel at Porter-Gaud School. The controversy arose from photographs showing the Bishop alongside Episcopal Bishop Ruth Woodliff-Stanley, which caused pain and confusion among members of the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA).

The Bishop explained that Porter-Gaud School, established in 1867, maintains a tradition of having the Bishop of South Carolina on its board. To accommodate both ACNA and The Episcopal Church (TEC) constituencies, the board decided to include bishops from both denominations. He noted that while the two churches are in broken communion due to substantial disagreements, cooperation at the school is limited to the institution's specific needs, similar to the Pax Nashotah arrangement.
