Bishop Pavlo Honcharuk warns of Russian imperial ambitions
Pavlo Honcharuk, the Catholic Bishop of Kharkiv-Zaporizhzhia, has shared his perspective on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine during the Rimini Meeting. Honcharuk emphasized that the Ukrainian people's strength is rooted in love for family and country rather than hatred, stating that allowing hatred to prevail would lead to spiritual loss.
In a more political assessment, Honcharuk expressed deep distrust toward Russia, describing the nation as an empire that requires war and continuous conquest to maintain its balance. He suggested that Russia acts like a bicycle that must keep moving through conflict to stay upright, implying that a peace agreement regarding the Donbas might not satisfy imperial ambitions.
These remarks highlight a tension between the local religious leadership in Ukraine and the Holy See's diplomatic efforts. While Vatican officials have recently engaged in dialogue with Russian leadership to seek political and diplomatic solutions, Honcharuk maintains that Russia's imperial nature makes them an unreliable partner for peace.
