Bishop Silvio Báez calls for justice against Nicaragua's Ortega regime
Silvio Báez, the exiled Auxiliary Bishop of Managua, has called for legal accountability for members of the Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo administration in Nicaragua. Speaking during a Sunday Mass at St. Agatha parish in Miami, Florida, Báez emphasized that religious mercy should not serve as a justification for legal impunity.
Báez argued that the crimes and human rights violations committed by the current regime demand rigorous judicial processes and due process. He stated that “the corrupt, unjust, torturers, and criminals must face the consequences of their actions and answer to the law,” noting that divine mercy is not an excuse for the impunity of criminals.
The prelate, who left Nicaragua in 2019 following death threats, warned that social reconciliation is impossible without justice and the repair of wrongs. He cautioned that attempting to move past atrocities without seeking accountability constitutes a moral and legal aberration that undermines social coexistence.
