Bison found dead and decapitated in Bistrița-Năsăud
An investigation has been launched in Bistrița-Năsăud County, Romania, after a European bison weighing over 800 kilograms was found dead and decapitated near Măgura Ilvei. The discovery has raised suspicions of poaching, as the animal is a strictly protected species.
Local authorities, including the Bistrița-Năsăud County Police and the Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Directorate (DSVSA), have arrived at the scene to conduct an inquiry. Prefect Stelian Dolha confirmed the investigation is underway to determine whether the death was due to natural causes, an attack by other animals, or illegal hunting for trophies.
The bison, which originated from a reserve in Suceava County, had been observed by locals since late September. It was noted for its peaceful behavior and had been seen near residential areas without showing aggression. Notably, the animal had received veterinary attention less than 24 hours before its death, during which it was sedated for health checks and appeared to be recovering well.
