Romania commemorates National Holocaust Remembrance Day

Romania marked the National Day of Commemoration of the Victims of the Holocaust on October 9, honoring the memory of Jews, Roma, and other persecuted ethnic groups. The date commemorates the beginning of the deportations of Jews from Romania to Transnistria in 1941, an event orchestrated by the regime of Marshal Ion Antonescu.

During official ceremonies in Bucharest, President Nicușor Dan emphasized the necessity of using history and memory to understand how such atrocities were possible with the complicity of state authorities and indifferent citizens. He stressed that acknowledging this painful chapter is essential for respecting human dignity and preventing future tragedies.

Other high-ranking officials, including Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu and Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, issued messages regarding the importance of education and the fight against antisemitism. Minister Țoiu argued that the Holocaust must not remain a mere academic subject but should serve as a living lesson in schools and media to combat ignorance, denialism, and dehumanization. The government reaffirmed its commitment to combating hate speech and xenophobia.
