Bitcoin acts as market benchmark amid macroeconomic uncertainty

The digital asset market is experiencing a period of correction as investors await key macroeconomic indicators, including U.S. Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) data and the upcoming Jackson Hole symposium. Bitcoin has retreated from recent highs above $81,000 to the $78,000 range, triggering profit-taking and liquidating over $220 million in long positions.

While major altcoins like XRP and Dogecoin saw significant declines, Ethereum and Binance Coin maintained slight gains. Despite the price volatility, institutional interest remains evident through digital asset ETF inflows, which recorded a net inflow of approximately $482 million. This suggests a divergence between immediate market sentiment and long-term institutional capital flows.

Bitcoin is increasingly functioning as a benchmark for the broader digital asset market, similar to the Nasdaq index. This shift is driven by the integration of Bitcoin into traditional finance via spot ETFs and corporate holdings. In the U.S., institutional demand from ETFs and listed companies is growing, whereas markets like South Korea remain heavily dominated by individual retail investors.
