Bitcoin and Ethereum options worth $18.1 billion set to expire

A massive quarterly expiration of Bitcoin and Ethereum options is scheduled for Friday, September 25, involving approximately $18.1 billion in notional value. Data from Coinbase Markets indicates that both markets are currently call-heavy. Bitcoin options show a 0.66 put-call ratio and a 24-hour volume ratio of 0.37, with significant call open interest concentrated near the $90,000 and $100,000 strike prices. Ethereum options exhibit a 0.61 open-interest put-call ratio and a 24-hour volume ratio of 0.55, with call interest clustered between $3,000 and $4,000.

On the Deribit exchange, approximately 182,000 BTC in Bitcoin options are set to expire. This includes 106,200 calls and 75,900 puts. The max pain price level for these expiring contracts is identified at $76,000. Analysts note that such large-scale expirations can trigger market volatility as traders adjust their hedging positions and liquidity shifts occur.

In related market activity, Glassnode reports that Bitcoin has broken above the Real Market Average level, which had previously acted as resistance. Additionally, Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) recently resumed its accumulation, purchasing 950 BTC for $75.7 million at an average price of $79,670 per coin.
