Bitcoin and Gold rank as 2026’s worst-performing major assets

In an unprecedented market development, Bitcoin and gold have emerged as the two worst-performing major asset classes of 2026. According to data from Creative Planning strategist Charlie Bilello, Bitcoin has declined 7.3% year-to-date, while gold has fallen by 7.5% through late October.

This simultaneous underperformance marks a historic first in Bilello’s tracking of 21 asset classes dating back to 2011. While both assets are traditionally marketed as safe havens and hedges against inflation or economic instability, they are currently being outperformed by a variety of other investments, including large US stocks, broad commodities, and even short-term US Treasury bills.

Analysts note that the decline challenges the usual diversification logic, as the two assets often move independently or serve as alternatives to one another. Factors such as high bond yields, interest rate policies, and shifting global liquidity are cited as potential drivers for the downturn. Despite the current slump, Bitcoin remains a significant long-term performer with high annualized returns compared to gold, though it has faced significant volatility following its late-2025 peak.
