Bitcoin and stablecoins serve distinct roles in the digital economy

Bitcoin and stablecoins serve distinct functions within the digital economy. Bitcoin operates as a scarce digital asset with a fixed maximum supply of 21 million, making it a market-driven asset often used for long-term holdings and treasury strategies.

In contrast, stablecoins like USDT and USDC are designed to track the value of fiat currencies, such as the U.S. dollar, through reserve assets. These tokens facilitate the movement of dollar-linked value across blockchain networks and are used by businesses and traders for settlement and liquidity.

There are also fundamental differences between stablecoins and traditional bank deposits. While bank deposits are claims on commercial banks and are often protected by deposit insurance like the FDIC in the United States, stablecoins are token-based assets that depend on the specific reserve assets held by their private issuers. For example, USDC is backed by cash and highly liquid instruments like short-term Treasuries, allowing for 1:1 redemption.
