Bitcoin digital credit market reaches $16 billion

The Bitcoin-based digital credit market has grown to approximately $16 billion, according to Dan Hillery, Vice President of the UTXO Credit division at UTXO Management. In a recent interview, Hillery noted that this sector, which was nearly non-existent two years ago, has the potential to expand to $1.5 trillion, potentially rivaling Bitcoin’s total market capitalization.

This market is primarily composed of instruments such as variable-rate preferred securities, including products like STRC and SATA. These instruments allow holders to access liquidity using Bitcoin as collateral without selling their positions. The growth of this sector represents a shift from centralized lending toward more transparent, on-chain financial structures.

Hillery emphasized the importance of distinguishing between digital credit risk and digital equity risk. While preferred security holders face specific dividend and redemption structures, equity holders are more directly exposed to Bitcoin price volatility and the issuer's capital structure. He also predicted that short-duration Bitcoin-backed notes and additional structured products could emerge over the next five years.
