Bitcoin dormant wallets move over $94 million

Multiple long-dormant Bitcoin wallets have recently been reactivated, moving significant amounts of cryptocurrency after years of inactivity. Between August 19 and August 20, 28 inactive wallets transferred a combined 1,314.41 BTC, valued at approximately $94.03 million at the time. A substantial portion of this movement—92.4%—originated from wallets created in 2014, representing about $86 million.

Much of this activity involved matching transaction sizes, including twenty-one separate transfers of exactly 50 BTC from legacy addresses. These transactions appear to have moved funds from older Pay-to-Public-Key-Hash (P2PKH) addresses to newer Pay-to-Witness-Public-Key-Hash (P2WPKH) formats.

In a separate instance of reactivation, a wallet that had been inactive for 15 years moved 8.54 BTC, worth roughly $538,000. Analysts note that while such movements are statistically small compared to total daily exchange volumes, the reactivation of ‘Satoshi-era’ wallets remains a key area of interest for institutional analysts monitoring liquidity and the technological challenges of managing legacy digital assets.
