Bitcoin dormant wallets reactivate, moving millions in assets

A series of long-dormant Bitcoin wallets have recently become active, moving significant amounts of cryptocurrency after years of inactivity. One wallet, created in 2016, transferred 1,260.77 BTC, a stash worth over $100 million at current prices. Another movement involved 600 BTC from mining rewards dating back to 2010, which analysts noted did not show patterns associated with Bitcoin’s creator, Satoshi Nakamoto.

In another instance, a wallet that had been silent since November 2011 moved 40 BTC, turning an initial $120 investment into approximately $3.09 million. These movements are occurring alongside an increase in the redemption of Casascius physical bitcoins, where owners remove holographic stickers to access the digital BTC stored on metal coins.

The reactivation of these ancient wallets has implications for ongoing legal discussions. A class-action lawsuit in New York has attempted to argue that extremely old, inactive wallets contain abandoned assets; however, these recent transfers demonstrate that original owners still maintain control over their private keys.
