Bitcoin faces volatility following Binance hack and investor losses

Bitcoin is experiencing significant market volatility driven by a major security breach at Binance and substantial unrealized losses among long-term holders. Binance reported that an attacker potentially stole approximately 6.3 billion dollars in cryptocurrency. Preliminary investigations suggest the breach may have involved a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop, granting unauthorized access to a service container.

The hack triggered a sharp price drop, exacerbated by liquidations in the leveraged trading market. Approximately 1.53 billion dollars in leveraged positions were closed within a 24-hour period, with 1.29 billion dollars coming from traders betting on price increases.

Additionally, data from Glassnode indicates that roughly 4 million Bitcoin are currently held at a loss. Long-term investors hold these coins at purchase prices between 85,000 and 118,000 dollars. As the price fluctuates, these investors may sell to recoup losses, creating a potential sell-off barrier near the 85,000 dollar mark. US Bitcoin ETFs are also in a vulnerable position, with an average purchase price of approximately 81,500 dollars.
