Bitcoin market value driven by scarcity and institutional demand
Bitcoin's role in the global economy is increasingly defined by its function as a store of wealth rather than a medium for retail payments. Despite its original design as a peer-to-peer electronic cash system, its market value is driven by scarcity and investment demand. With a total supply capped at approximately 21 million BTC, the asset's price can appreciate based on investor willingness to hold or acquire limited supply, similar to the economic principles governing gold.
The integration of Bitcoin into the broader financial system has grown significantly. As of August 2025, Bitcoin's market value reached approximately $2.31 trillion. This scale means the asset is no longer limited to individual traders but is held on the balance sheets of asset managers, institutions, and national treasuries. Exposure is also widespread through exchange-traded funds (ETFs), futures, and retirement accounts, meaning a significant market collapse would impact pension funds and everyday savers.
