Bitcoin volatility spikes as Standard Chartered revises year-end targets upward

Bitcoin has experienced significant volatility, characterized by a rapid rally followed by a sharp correction. The cryptocurrency recently saw a massive short-liquidation event, with Coinglass data indicating that short liquidations approached $1.44 billion during the August rally. This surge was accompanied by renewed demand from spot Bitcoin ETFs, which recorded $2.07 billion in net inflows for August.

Following the rally, Bitcoin faced downward pressure, dropping from highs near $79,500 to levels below $76,000. This downturn triggered approximately $547 million in liquidations, primarily affecting leveraged long positions. Despite this pullback, market sentiment remains mixed. Standard Chartered's Geoff Kendrick noted that the bank's previous year-end target of $100,000 may now be too low, suggesting Bitcoin could potentially reach its previous record high of $126,000 by the end of the year.

On-chain data also highlights large-scale movements, including a single whale selling 7,770 BTC valued at approximately $576.6 million over a three-day period. While some analysts warn of an overbought market and potential further corrections toward the $69,000-$70,000 range, others point to the Bitcoin Bull Score crossing the 60 threshold—a signal not seen since October 2025—as a sign of a potential regime shift toward a bullish cycle.
