Bitcoin ownership projected to reach 373 million by 2026

Global Bitcoin ownership is estimated to reach 373 million by June 2026, representing approximately 48.3% of all cryptocurrency owners. While specific country-by-country Bitcoin holder counts are unavailable, a grassroots adoption index for the period of July 2025 to June 2026 ranked Brazil first, followed by the United States and India.

On the institutional side, total government Bitcoin holdings decreased in 2026, falling from 647,231 BTC to 645,596 BTC. Bhutan saw the most significant decline, with tracked holdings dropping 91%. Conversely, Kazakhstan and El Salvador were the only governments to increase their holdings. The United States remains the largest government holder with 328,372 BTC, followed by China and the United Kingdom.

Market indicators suggest potential selling pressure among U.S. institutional investors, as evidenced by a negative Coinbase Premium Index, which shows Bitcoin trading at lower prices on Coinbase than on Binance. This trend occurs alongside broader economic factors, including rising bond yields and a strong U.S. dollar, which may impact investor appetite for riskier assets.
