Bitcoin payments decline in El Salvador’s Bitcoin Beach

Bitcoin payments appear to be declining in El Zonte, El Salvador, a community known as ‘Bitcoin Beach’ that served as an inspiration for the nation’s official cryptocurrency policies. Jon Atack, a Bitcoin Core contributor living in the country, reported that a local restaurant recorded its first Bitcoin transaction of the month when he paid for lunch. Staff members indicated that while Bitcoin payments were once common, they have become ‘practically non-existent,’ with most customers now opting to pay by card.

While Atack’s account is anecdotal, it aligns with university polling showing that only 8.1% of Salvadorans reported using Bitcoin for purchases in 2024. Analysts suggest a ‘HODL’ mentality—where holders treat Bitcoin as a long-term savings asset rather than a medium of exchange—may be contributing to the decline in active spending. This behavior is described as ‘counter-economic’ in an environment where users expect the asset's value to increase.

Despite these reports, some travelers have noted that Bitcoin acceptance remains available and they have successfully completed transactions in the area. El Salvador has previously made private-sector Bitcoin acceptance voluntary following revisions to its Bitcoin Law under commitments to the IMF.
