Bitcoin Policy Institute study finds U.S. voters prioritize financial control over digital gold metaphors
A national study conducted by the Bitcoin Policy Institute, Cygnal, and Neighborhood Bitcoin reveals that U.S. voters are increasingly interested in Bitcoin, driven by a desire for personal financial control and concerns regarding the stability of the U.S. dollar. The research found that approximately 94% of registered voters are familiar with Bitcoin, and 61% expressed interest in learning more about owning fractional amounts of the asset.
The study highlights a significant disconnect between industry marketing and consumer perception. The common “digital gold” metaphor reportedly caused confusion among focus groups and performed poorly. Instead, messaging centered on personal autonomy, security, and proven historical performance resonated most effectively with participants.
Regarding information sources, respondents prioritized trusted personal connections. Financial advisors with whom individuals have a prior relationship ranked as the most trusted source (33%), outperforming retirement experts, friends, family, and celebrities. Additionally, 74% of those surveyed expressed low or no confidence in the ability of the U.S. dollar to maintain its purchasing power in the global economy.
