Bitcoin price patterns deviate from historical US midterm election trends
Bitcoin's recent price movements appear to be breaking historical patterns associated with US midterm elections. Historically, Bitcoin has often hit price bottoms between 13 and 71 days following midterm elections, with significant drops observed in 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022.
However, analysts note that Bitcoin reached a low in July and has since rebounded by approximately 40%, suggesting the market bottom may have arrived earlier than usual. This shift is being attributed to the influence of spot Bitcoin ETFs, which have allowed Wall Street capital to flow into the asset more consistently, regardless of election cycles. As of late September, net inflows into spot Bitcoin ETFs reached $6.34 billion for the third quarter.
Despite the early recovery, some analysts remain cautious. While the influx of ETF capital is a significant factor, recent data shows volatility in fund flows, including net outflows in October. The correlation between elections and Bitcoin prices remains a subject of debate, as both the US election cycle and the Bitcoin halving event occur on roughly four-year intervals, making it difficult to isolate the independent impact of the election itself.
