Bitcoin Security Consortium Launched by Nine Major Institutions

On July 23, 2026 nine leading Bitcoin‑related institutions – BlackRock, Coinbase, Fidelity Digital Assets, Block, Blockstream, Anchorage Digital, Galaxy, Strategy and ARK Invest – announced the formation of the Bitcoin Security Consortium. The nonprofit Brink will coordinate the effort, with executive director Mike Schmidt acting as a volunteer coordinator. Collectively the members have pledged US$15 million over the next three years to fund open‑source security research and development for Bitcoin.

The consortium’s primary focus is preparing for long‑term threats such as quantum‑computing attacks, which could endanger roughly 35 % of the Bitcoin supply (about 7 million BTC, worth $460 billion). Funding will support developers and researchers working on post‑quantum cryptographic solutions. The group does not control Bitcoin’s protocol; each member distributes its own funds independently and has no voting power over network upgrades.
