Bitcoin surges past $80,000 despite Fed rate hike and legislative setbacks

Bitcoin has defied traditional market logic by surging past $80,000 despite a series of significant macroeconomic and regulatory headwinds. The cryptocurrency faced a dual blow when the Federal Reserve implemented its first interest rate hike in approximately three years and the U.S. Senate failed to pass the CLARITY Act, a key piece of legislation intended to establish a regulatory framework for digital assets.

Market analysts suggest these negative factors may have already been priced into the market. While the interest rate hike typically pressures risk assets, Bitcoin's resilience is being attributed to heavy inflows into spot Bitcoin ETFs—including significant investments in BlackRock’s IBIT and Fidelity’s FBTC—and a massive liquidation of short positions. As prices rose, short sellers were forced to buy back, further fueling the upward momentum.

Furthermore, the failure of the CLARITY Act has not been interpreted by the market as a total regulatory retreat. Instead, investors appear to be anticipating that regulatory bodies like the SEC and CFTC will move forward by establishing rules through their existing administrative authorities. This shift toward rule-based regulation, rather than legislative mandates, has provided a sense of a predictable path forward for the industry.
