MSCI finalizes rules that could exclude Bitcoin treasury firms from global indexes

MSCI has finalized new eligibility rules for its Global Investable Market Indexes that target “non-operating companies.” The new methodology replaces a temporary 50% digital asset threshold with a screening process based on substantial operating assets and five specific financial ratios. Companies that fail at least four of these five ratios will be deemed ineligible.

This decision poses a significant risk to Bitcoin treasury firms, most notably Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) and Japan-based Metaplanet. Strategy has criticized the move as “discriminatory” against companies using digital assets for treasury management. Analysts at JPMorgan estimate that Strategy’s removal from MSCI indexes could trigger approximately $2.8 billion in liquidations as passive funds are forced to sell their holdings. If other major index providers follow suit, total outflows could reach between $8 billion and $11 billion.

The final list of affected companies is scheduled to be published on November 11, 2026, with the changes set to take effect following the market close on November 30, 2026. To prevent excessive index turnover, MSCI has included buffer mechanisms: existing constituents will only be removed if they fail the criteria for two consecutive annual reporting periods.
