Bitcoin treasury firms expand digital credit and bond markets

Companies utilizing Bitcoin treasury strategies are developing distinct financial instruments to access capital markets. Michael Saylor, Chairman of MicroStrategy, suggests that competition between firms like MicroStrategy and Strive can actually expand the Bitcoin-based credit market. He distinguishes between Bitcoin as digital capital and various securities—such as preferred stocks (STRC and SATA)—as digital credit, arguing that increased market participation improves liquidity and lowers funding costs.

In Japan, Metaplanet is pursuing a different approach due to local market conditions. Unlike MicroStrategy, which utilizes external securities firms, Metaplanet acquired Siiibo Securities to bring financial product structuring in-house. This allows the company to issue senior debt through its “BitBonds” program, a method deemed more suitable for the Japanese market where the listing of preferred shares is uncommon. Metaplanet aims to expand this program to include other companies, seeking to develop the corporate bond market while implementing internal and external oversight to manage potential conflicts of interest.
