Anthropic secures $10 billion compute deal with Volta for Norway AI data centre
Anthropic has signed a six‑year, $10 billion compute agreement with Volta Infrastructure Holdings. The contract secures roughly 121‑133 MW of Nvidia Vera Rubin GPU capacity at a hydro‑powered AI data centre in Tydal, Norway, built in partnership with crypto‑miner Bitdeer. Bitdeer’s subsidiary Tydal Data Center signed a 16‑year lease for the capacity, valued at $4.7 billion for the initial term with an optional eight‑year renewal that could raise the total to about $8 billion. Following the announcement, Bitdeer shares jumped about 23%. Volta’s payments to Bitdeer are backed by about $1.3 billion of standby letters of credit from J.P. Morgan affiliates and another global institution. Volta is backed by investors including Nvidia, Andreessen Horowitz, Altimeter, Michael Dell’s family office and Azora. In parallel, Anthropic announced the creation of a custom silicon team to design its own AI chips and is exploring a partnership with Samsung for production.
