Bitget to Exit Japanese Market, Halting Services for Residents
Cryptocurrency exchange Bitget announced it will cease providing services to Japan residents. New account registrations were stopped immediately and, from 1 November, existing accounts will be switched to a “close‑only” mode that blocks new trades and limits deposits and withdrawals. Any open positions must be closed by 31 December, after which all remaining assets can be withdrawn. Users classified as Japan residents must complete Level 2 identity verification, including address proof, by the November deadline or their accounts will remain restricted.
The move follows repeated warnings from Japan’s Financial Services Agency – first in March 2023 and again in November 2024 – that Bitget was operating without the required local registration. A further warning from the Kanto Local Finance Bureau in June 2025 cited unregistered OTC derivatives activity. Rather than seek a licence, Bitget has chosen to withdraw from the Japanese market.
