Bithumb cryptocurrency exchange suffers data breach

South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb confirmed a security breach involving its internal mobile groupware system, Daou Office. The unauthorized access, which occurred on October 27, lasted approximately one hour.

According to company disclosures, the breach affected 6,444 customer records and 715 employees or external contractors. While 5,600 customer records remained encrypted and unreadable, personal information for 844 customers was confirmed to have been leaked. Exposed data may include names, mobile numbers, email addresses, resident registration numbers, bank account details, and copies of identification documents.

Bithumb emphasized that the compromised groupware system is physically and operationally separate from its core cryptocurrency trading platform and customer asset management systems. The company stated that no customer funds or wallet addresses were accessed or stolen during the incident.

South Korean regulators, including the Financial Services Commission (FSC) and the Personal Information Protection Commission, have launched on-site inspections to investigate the cause and assess the extent of the exposure. Bithumb has pledged to compensate affected customers and is working with security agencies to strengthen its internal controls.
