Bitlis tomato harvest begins near Mount Nemrut

The tomato harvest has commenced in the Tatvan district of Bitlis, specifically in the Karşıyaka neighborhood near the foothills of Mount Nemrut. Bitlis Governor Ahmet Karakaya participated in the harvest to inspect the progress and support local workers.

Bitlis currently ranks first in tomato production within the Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia regions and holds the seventh position in Turkey. Approximately 34,000 decares of land are dedicated to tomato cultivation in the province. The region produces both traditional varieties and industrial-type ‘Bambam’ tomatoes, which are distributed to various provinces across Turkey for fresh consumption, paste, and canning.

In addition to tomatoes, the province utilizes approximately 1.5 million decares of agricultural land for various products including potatoes and beans, and maintains a significant presence in honey production.
