Bitlis Castle excavations near 95% completion, Ottoman structures uncovered

Archaeological work at Bitlis Castle, which began in 2004, has progressed to about 95% of its planned scope. The Bitlis Provincial Culture and Tourism Directorate, led by Osman Üner, reported that the excavations—supported by the Eren family—have revealed a school, cistern, mosque and bath dating to the late Ottoman period, most of which are now ready for restoration.

Under the scientific guidance of Dr. Yunus Emre Karasu, researchers uncovered numerous artifacts such as coins, ceramics, glass and metal items, as well as a north‑south road extending from the palace area to the historic Sinan Bey Bath. The team expects the majority of work to be completed by 2026, paving the way for tourism development at the site.
