Bitlis, Turkey witnesses simultaneous moonset and sunrise

In the early hours of 2 July 2026, the full moon set as the Sun rose over Bitlis, Turkey, creating a rare simultaneous moonset‑sunrise display. The phenomenon was recorded by astrophotographer Dr Cihan Önen, who captured the moon disappearing on the western horizon while the Sun’s first rays painted the eastern sky in red and orange tones. Residents and sky‑watchers gathered to view the event, describing it as a spectacular visual feast.

Experts noted that Bitlis’s high altitude and clear atmosphere enhance the visibility of such events and said that similar occurrences could be observed again when atmospheric conditions are favourable.
