BitMEX to begin phased wind-down of trading operations
BitMEX, a prominent cryptocurrency derivatives exchange, has announced a structured wind-down of its operations. Following a strategic review by the board of HDR Global Trading, the platform will enter a risk-limit phase on August 26 at 04:00 UTC. During this period, users will be prohibited from opening new positions and will only be permitted to close or reduce existing ones.
Trading services are scheduled to cease entirely on September 23 at 04:00 UTC. The company clarified that this decision is not driven by insolvency, hacking, or regulatory enforcement. As of August 22, the platform reported an open value of approximately 108,146 bitcoin across its active instruments.
Post-closure, users will retain limited access to log in, check balances, and view transaction history. However, withdrawal capabilities will be restricted starting September 28, at which point API and institutional withdrawals via Fireblocks and Copper will be discontinued. Additionally, accounts holding remaining balances after the September 23 shutdown will incur a monthly fee, calculated as the greater of 1% annually or $50.
