BitMEX to Close Operations in September 2026, Signalling a Turning Point for Crypto Derivatives
The cryptocurrency derivatives exchange BitMEX announced it will cease operations on 23 September 2026 at 04:00 UTC. New account registrations were halted immediately, and from 26 August new position openings were barred, allowing only liquidation of existing trades. Founded in 2014 and known for popularising perpetual contracts with up to 100‑fold leverage, BitMEX operated from Hong Kong under a Seychelles‑registered company. The shutdown follows years of regulatory scrutiny and a broader industry shift toward regulated futures, ETFs and decentralized finance platforms. While BitMEX never suffered a major hack, changing compliance requirements and competition from institutional‑grade products contributed to the decision. The closure reflects a wider transformation in the crypto market, where legacy platforms are giving way to services that meet evolving legal frameworks.
