Health experts and research link lifestyle habits to brain health

New research and expert advice highlight the importance of mental and physical engagement for long-term health. Personal trainer Dan Lawrence suggests starting the day with four key habits: ten minutes of movement, light stretching to improve blood flow and oxygen to the brain, spending at least five minutes outdoors to regulate circadian rhythms, and hydrating immediately upon waking.

Separately, a study from the University of Southern California, published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia, examined the impact of sedentary leisure activities on brain structure. Following 1,700 Americans over several decades, researchers found that high levels of television consumption were associated with brain changes linked to cognitive decline, including reduced white matter integrity. Interestingly, the study noted that sedentary desk work involving concentration and problem-solving did not show the same negative effects, suggesting that the mental quality of an activity may be more significant than physical stillness alone.
