Bitter melon hailed as liver‑health champion by US studies

U.S. researchers report that extracts of bitter melon (Momordica charantia) can markedly improve liver function. A team led by Professor Ratna Ray at Saint Louis University found that the extract suppresses liver‑cancer cell growth, causing tumor size to shrink by up to 50% in animal models, as published in *Cell Communication and Signaling* (Oct 2024). The same studies show the compound boosts fatty‑acid oxidation in liver cells, helping reduce fat buildup.

Separate work from the University of Colorado, appearing in the *Journal of Ethnopharmacology*, showed that daily intake of about 2 g of bitter‑melon extract improved blood‑glucose control and insulin sensitivity in diabetic participants. Animal experiments also indicated a reduction in hepatic lipid accumulation. Researchers stress that these benefits accrue only with sustained, long‑term consumption rather than occasional use.
