Bitwise survey shows institutions maintained crypto exposure despite 50% market decline
A survey by Bitwise involving 15 major institutions indicates that institutional investors maintained their cryptocurrency allocations despite a market decline of approximately 50% between late 2025 and early 2026. None of the interviewed institutions reduced their exposure during this period, with some even increasing their holdings.
Bitcoin remains the primary asset of interest, with every institution surveyed holding BTC. Many investors view Bitcoin as a store of value or a hedge against currency debasement, similar to gold. While Bitcoin dominates portfolios, exposure to assets like Ethereum and Solana tends to be smaller and tied to specific adoption expectations.
Beyond current holders, the report highlights growing interest from prospective buyers. Several institutions without existing positions are in advanced stages of due diligence, and multiple sovereign wealth funds are examining potential large-scale allocations. Bitwise anticipates that a majority of institutional investors will hold crypto within the next five years.
