Bizkaia beaches attract over 1 million visitors in first half of summer
More than 1,081,155 people have visited the beaches of Bizkaia since the season began, a 1.42% rise compared with the same period last year. The most frequented sites were Ereaga (175,726 users) and La Arena (160,268), followed by Arriatera‑Atxabiribil, Bakio and Laga. Several beaches, including Laida, La Arena, San Antonio, Armintza and Ogella, recorded the largest increases in attendance.
The lifeguard team performed 1,536 medical assists, with wounds (629), Portuguese man‑of‑war stings (214) and falls (151) being the most common incidents. It also carried out 55 rescues for strong currents and 50 for fatigue, alongside other interventions. The assisted‑bathing service delivered 2,606 sessions to people with reduced mobility, supporting 1,698 users from associations or residences and 908 private individuals.
Beach cleaning crews removed 159,745 kg of waste, most of it debris deposited by tides. Weather conditions were favourable, with 21 sunny days, 23 variable days and only one rainy day, and the average water temperature reached 21.8 °C. The green flag was hoisted 561 times, indicating safe swimming conditions. Deputy Arantza Atutxa of the Diputación Foral de Bizkaia said, "This data confirms that our beaches are a reference and that citizens trust them to enjoy the summer."
