Bizkaia declares emergency status for minor protection centers
The Provincial Council of Bizkaia has declared an emergency status for its minor protection centers due to significant capacity issues. While the network is designed to accommodate 406 minors, it is currently housing 594 individuals.
Spokesperson Leixuri Arrizabalaga stated that the service is under tension and that the emergency declaration allows technicians to analyze and implement necessary resources, which may include expanding the team or increasing available facilities. This is a recurring issue; a similar emergency status was declared in November 2024.
Data shows a surge in arrivals during the summer months, with 224 minors entering the centers for the first time between June 1 and August 31. The council noted that while previous measures helped ease tension, the continuous influx necessitates further action.
