Bizum celebrates 10 years with 32.5 million users in Spain
The Spanish instant payment platform Bizum is celebrating its tenth anniversary, marking a decade of evolution from simple peer-to-peer transfers to a major component of Europe’s strategic financial sovereignty. Owned by a consortium of Spanish banks—including CaixaBank, Santander, and BBVA—the platform has reached 32.5 million users, representing approximately 70% of the adult population in Spain.
Since its inception, Bizum has facilitated nearly 6 billion operations with a total value of 310 billion euros. The service has expanded its utility through key milestones, such as the introduction of donation capabilities in 2017 and e-commerce integration in 2019. Currently, the platform processes approximately 40 payments per second.
Looking forward, Bizum is expanding its footprint beyond Spain. It has already established interoperability with Italy, Portugal, and Greece, and has included Andorran financial entities. The platform is also focusing on accelerating in-store physical payments through Bizum Pay, which is already available to 21 million users and 1.7 million establishments. The European Union views the platform as a vital tool to reduce dependence on non-European payment systems.
